What to borrow instead of a tribal loan

Every lender below is one people search for by name. For each one we hold the APR ceiling, the cheaper tribal brands in our database, and what the same $1,000 costs through a non-tribal route. The goal on all 17 pages is the same: pay less.

The cheapest genuine alternative is a credit-union Payday Alternative Loan, capped at 28% APR with application fees capped at $20 — about $1,158 to repay $1,000 over twelve months. The same $1,000 at MaxLend's 841% ceiling repays about $8,424. Everything else on this page sits between those two numbers.

There is a second question underneath the first one, and it matters more for most people who land here: are you shopping for a new loan, or trying to get out of one you already have? If it is the second, an alternative lender is the wrong tool — start with is the loan even enforceable where you live? and then which way out costs you least?

Alternatives to tribal loans — frequently asked

What is the cheapest alternative to a tribal loan?

A credit-union Payday Alternative Loan. Federal rules cap a PAL at 28% APR with application fees capped at $20, so $1,000 over twelve months costs about $1,158 to repay. The same $1,000 at MaxLend's 841% ceiling repays about $8,424. You must be a member of the credit union, and most require 30 days of membership before you can apply.

Is switching to another tribal lender an alternative?

Only in the narrow sense that a lower rate is better than a higher one. Every lender on these pages is still a triple-digit-APR product, so moving between them reduces the damage rather than ending it. We list the cheaper tribal options because people do borrow anyway and the difference between a 400% and a 780% ceiling is real money — but a non-tribal route beats all of them.

Should I refinance a tribal loan I already have?

Usually not into another tribal loan. If your payment is smaller than the monthly interest on the balance, the principal never moves and refinancing just resets the clock. Before you pay more into it, check whether the loan is enforceable where you live — nine states void these loans outright — and then work through the exit options rather than the borrowing options.

How do you decide which lender is cheaper?

We compare on the APR ceiling, not the advertised floor. In this industry the low headline rate is a teaser reserved for the strongest applicants, while the ceiling is what most borrowers actually get. Ranking on the ceiling is the comparison that matches what people are charged.

Cheaper tribal options are drawn from our own lender database and ranked on the APR ceiling. Non-tribal figures use the published regulatory caps for each product, not lender marketing. See the full list of tribal lenders for the underlying data and how we score lenders for the method.
