Teletrack

An alternative "subprime" credit bureau tribal lenders check instead of the major bureaus.

What "teletrack" means

Teletrack (now part of Equifax) is a specialty consumer-reporting agency that tracks short-term and subprime loan activity. Tribal lenders pull Teletrack — along with Clarity, DataX and FactorTrust — to approve applicants, rather than running a hard inquiry on Equifax, Experian or TransUnion.

This is why tribal loans are marketed as "no credit check": they skip the major bureaus. It is also why on-time payments usually don't build your mainstream credit — the activity is reported to Teletrack-style bureaus, not the ones that set your FICO score.

The practical consequence is asymmetric, and it is the strongest argument against using these loans to rebuild credit. Because repayment is usually reported only to specialty bureaus, paying on time typically does nothing for your mainstream score. A default, however, may be sold to a collection agency that does report to the majors — so the downside reaches your credit file even when the upside does not.

Teletrack — frequently asked

What does Teletrack mean?

Teletrack is a specialty consumer-reporting agency, now part of Equifax, that tracks short-term and subprime lending activity. It is one of the files tribal and payday lenders check instead of running a hard inquiry at Equifax, Experian or TransUnion.

Who uses Teletrack?

Payday, tribal and other small-dollar lenders — the part of the market the major bureaus do not serve well. It sits alongside Clarity (Experian), DataX (Equifax) and FactorTrust (TransUnion) as the files these lenders actually underwrite from.

Is Teletrack legitimate?

Yes. It is a consumer reporting agency regulated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which means you are entitled to one free copy of your file every twelve months and to dispute anything inaccurate in it. Requesting it is worth doing if you are challenging a tribal loan, because it shows exactly what the lender reported and when.

What does “no Teletrack” actually mean?

That the lender does not check that particular file — usually because it checks Clarity, DataX or FactorTrust instead. It does not mean there is no check at all, and it is not a promise of approval.
