What an Explore Credit loan really costs

Explore Credit lends $250–$2,000 over anywhere from 61 days to 72 months. It advertises a 5.99–35.99% APR 'for qualified consumers,' but its own BBB and review record documents effective rates above 700% — one figure cited a 799% cost, with a roughly $300 loan repaying near $2,000.

An origination fee of 1–8% is deducted from what you receive. The gap between the advertised ceiling and the real cost is the central problem, and most mainstream aggregators simply reprint the 35.99% figure without flagging it.

Where it's less bad
  • Long available term range (61 days to 72 months).
  • No prepayment penalty.
  • Decision in minutes, funding in 1–2 business days.
What to watch
  • Advertised 35.99% ceiling contradicted by complaints documenting 700%+ effective APR.
  • Origination fee of 1–8% deducted from proceeds.
  • Recurring unauthorized-ACH and never-applied-for-account complaints.
  • One of 8–9 interchangeable sister storefronts — being blocked from one routes you to a clone.

Where Explore Credit lends

Explore Credit serves roughly 32 states. Notably, it does not lend in Georgia — even though its consumer servicing runs from an Atlanta, Georgia address.

By its own terms, Explore Credit does not lend to residents of:

Does Explore Credit report to credit bureaus?

Explore Credit does not clearly disclose whether it reports to the major bureaus; on-time payments likely will not build credit, and there is no confirmed use of Teletrack or Clarity. Assume it will not help your score.

Who actually owns and runs Explore Credit

Explore Credit is operated by WLCC Lending JEM, LLC, a subsidiary of the Wakpamni Lake Community Corporation, an economic arm of the Oglala Sioux Tribe (Pine Ridge, South Dakota). Its consumer servicing runs from a PO box in Atlanta, Georgia — not the reservation.

Critically, it is one of at least eight or nine interchangeable WLCC storefronts (Fast Day Loans, Good Loans Fast, Bison Green Lending, EnableLoans and others), so a borrower blocked from one brand can simply be routed to a clone.

Lawsuits across the WLCC family

In Banas v. WLCC Lending FDL (N.D. Ill., 1:24-cv-2770, filed 2024), a rent-a-tribe usury class action targets Explore Credit's sister entity, Fast Day Loans; a related Indiana action (Karen Brown v. Fast Day Loans) makes similar claims. Washington's DFI has issued a consumer alert that the Wakpamni/Oglala Sioux operation is not licensed there.

Because the brands share operators, litigation risk runs across the whole family, not just one storefront.

What Explore Credit costs in dollars

Explore Credit's published ceiling is 830% APR. Below is what that rate does to the amounts it actually lends, repaid over 12 monthly payments.

What $200–$1,500 costs at Explore Credit's 830% APR over 12 monthly payments
You borrowMonthlyTotal repaidInterest
$200$139$1,663$1,463
$900$624$7,484$6,584
$1,500$1,039$12,473$10,973

At 830%, a $200 balance accrues about $138 in interest every month. Any payment below that figure leaves you owing more than you started with, however long you pay.

Standard amortisation at the published ceiling rate; fees are not included, and your actual rate and term may differ. Run your own numbers in the payoff calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the real APR on an Explore Credit loan?

Despite an advertised 5.99–35.99%, the lender’s own complaint record documents effective APRs above 700%, with a roughly $300 loan repaying near $2,000. Read your agreement’s APR box — the advertised ceiling is not what most borrowers pay.

Is Explore Credit the same as Fast Day Loans or Bison Green?

They are sister storefronts of the same operator — WLCC Lending, owned by the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Wakpamni Lake Community Corporation. There are at least 8–9 near-identical brands, so being declined or blocked at one can route you to a clone.

Why won’t Explore Credit lend in Georgia?

Georgia’s lending laws would not permit its high-rate product, so it excludes Georgia — despite running its consumer servicing from an Atlanta, Georgia address. It serves about 32 states.

Is Explore Credit a tribal loan?

Yes. Explore Credit is a tribal lending brand owned by the Wakpamni Lake Community Corp. in SD. That means it lends under tribal law and claims sovereign immunity from your state's interest-rate cap, rather than holding a state lending licence. It is also why its APR reaches 400–830% — far above the roughly 36% cap most states set for small loans. Whether the loan is enforceable where you live depends on your state.

What does an Explore Credit loan cost?

Explore Credit lends $200–$1,500 at 400–830% APR. At those rates the total repaid is typically several times the amount borrowed, because interest is front-loaded — check the total of payments, not the monthly figure.

Is an Explore Credit loan legal in my state?

It depends entirely on your state. High-cost tribal loans are effectively banned in nine states, where a loan above the rate cap can be void and not legally collectible, and restricted in many more. Explore Credit claims tribal sovereign immunity from those caps — an argument courts have accepted in some cases and rejected in others. Check your state before you borrow, and especially before you pay a collector.

How this site works

We are an independent registry — not a lender, not a broker and not a lead generator. This lender did not pay to appear here and cannot pay to change what the review says. We take no money from any lender and sell no applications.

Entries are built from the lender's own published disclosures, tribal corporate and lending-authority records, federal and state court filings, and CFPB, FTC and state regulator actions. Of the 143 brands in the full list of tribal lenders, 41 are confirmed lending, 74 sit on a watchlist pending verification, and 28 have shut down. Where a figure cannot be sourced we leave it blank rather than estimate it — which is why some entries are deliberately incomplete.
